    Tom Bode is a Portland native, entrepreneur, music composer, and photographer who loves fishing and Pacific NW history.

    In the early 1990's, Tom began selling instant photos on the streets of Seattle using his grandfather's old Polaroid Land Camera 250. Over the next dozen or so years he took thousands of instant portraits around the NW and saw both Polaroid and Fuji films go out of production. Tom has been asked to speak about his experiences with instant films and why he believes they are having a comeback in popularity.

    The Tohoku Effect

    “When the Haiti earthquake struck, we ran an event around the world on 24 hour skype. A Year later, the shoe was on the other foot; the earthquake happened in Japan. 105 cities got together within 3 weeks and we held an Inspire Japan Event.”


    From PKN Tokyo’s recent "Powered by PechaKucha: Tohoku 2020: Building a sustainable Post-3/11 Future" Speaker and PechaKucha founder Mark Dytham presents "The Tohoku Effect" on PechaKucha’s and PechaKucha Inspire’s history. No one could have predicted that the small one-off event would balloon into a popular presentation format to be used the world over. PechaKucha Certainly has its perks; It’s free, It’s simple, it lets people give their work exposure. Most importantly of all, it builds community. It is such communities that come together when tragedies strike and help build warm spaces.

    When Art and Science Collide

    “I wanted to learn the beautiful mechanism of the universe, nature, and life. So i studied biology and chemistry in my university. And that’s when i thought ‘how cool would it be to integrate all of this into art?’”

    In When Art and Science Collide from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 132,  contemporary artist and science researcher Yoko Shimizu details her work. One may think that art and Science are total opposites but not Yoko. She finds that the beauty of the scientific principles that surround us to be timeless, limitless, and inspirational. Yoko –who has won many awards her scientific artworks– creates installations that integrate both art and science.

    My Cosmopolitan Chicken Akosua

    Last November, Sueli Brodin and her family adopted a cosmopolitan chicken named Akosua. This experiment is part of Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen’s #PerfectStrangers citizen science art project. Sueli not only takes care of Akosua, but also keeps a diary about everything that she experiences with her. Sueli tells us about the adventures she and her family have lived together with Akosua and what thoughts and questions this experience has provoked.
